LONGWOOD COLLECTIVE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTS PETER HEALY OF BETH ISRAEL LAHEY HEALTH AS NEXT CHAIR
Healy succeeds Dick Argys of Boston Children’s Hospital following a period of significant growth and evolution for the organization
The Longwood Collective today announced the election of Peter Healy as the new Chair of its Board of Directors. Healy, who serves as Divisional President, Metro Boston for Beth Israel Lahey Health and President of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), was elected at the organization’s recent Joint Annual Meeting of Members and Board of Directors.
Healy succeeds Dick Argys, Executive Vice President, Hospital Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Culture Officer at Boston Children’s Hospital, who has served as Board Chair since 2017. Argys recently announced his plans to retire from Boston Children’s Hospital following a distinguished career in healthcare leadership.
As Chair, Healy will help guide the Longwood Collective's work on transportation, planning, district stewardship, sustainability, emergency preparedness, and shared services on behalf of the organizations that make up the Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA), one of the world's leading centers for healthcare, research, education, and innovation.
“The Longwood Medical and Academic Area is one of the world’s most remarkable concentrations of medical innovation, patient care, and academic excellence, and the Longwood Collective is part of the connective tissue that makes it all work,” said Healy. “I am honored to serve as Chair and look forward to working with my colleagues across the district to strengthen the collaboration that allows our institutions to focus on their core missions of healing, discovery, and education.”
Healy brings decades of healthcare leadership experience in Greater Boston, having held senior roles at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center - Milton, Boston Medical Center, and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. As President of BIDMC, he leads a 766-bed academic medical center affiliated with Harvard Medical School, with more than 12,000 employees and hundreds of millions of dollars in annual research funding. In his role as Divisional President, Metro Boston, he oversees four leading academic and specialty institutions: BIDMC, Joslin Diabetes Center, Mount Auburn Hospital, and New England Baptist Hospital.
“Peter has been one of the most engaged and thoughtful voices in the Longwood community for many years,” said David Sweeney, President and CEO of the Longwood Collective. “He understands both the extraordinary opportunities and the complex challenges that come with operating in Longwood. His deep roots in this district, breadth of leadership experience, and commitment to collaboration make him exceptionally well suited to lead the Board at a pivotal moment for both the Longwood Collective and the district.”
The election comes at a time when the Longwood Collective’s role continues to evolve beyond its traditional shared services roots. In recent years, the organization has become an increasingly important district partner, helping institutions navigate transportation, development, resilience, public policy, and other challenges that no single organization can solve alone.
Under Argys's leadership, the organization helped guide member institutions through the COVID-19 pandemic, advanced landmark transportation and resilience planning efforts, expanded its role as a district planning and policy partner, and completed its transition from MASCO to the Longwood Collective during the organization's 50th anniversary year. His tenure helped position the organization as a more strategic district partner while continuing to deliver the critical services on which member institutions rely every day.
“Dick’s leadership has been transformative for this organization,” Sweeney added. “He helped position the Longwood Collective not simply to respond to change, but to help shape it. He provided steady leadership through some of the most consequential moments in our organization’s history and helped strengthen the Longwood Collective’s role as a trusted partner to institutions, public officials, and community stakeholders alike. We are deeply grateful for his years of service.”
"What happens between Brookline Avenue and Longwood Avenue matters to the rest of the world," said Argys. "The Longwood Collective helps make possible the collaboration that strengthens this extraordinary district, and it has been an honor to serve as Chair. I am confident Peter will provide thoughtful leadership as the organization continues its important work."
The Longwood Collective Board of Directors includes representatives from each of the organization’s member institutions and Directors-at-Large, who collectively represent the interests of its Associate Members. A full list of member institutions can be found here.
